Choosing the Right International Airport in Costa Rica

When planning a trip to Costa Rica, selecting the appropriate international airport is a crucial first step. This guide will provide valuable insights into the country’s two primary international airports, helping you determine which one best suits your travel needs.

Costa Rica's International Airports: Key Hubs

Costa Rica boasts two primary international airports: Juan Santamaría International Airport (San Jose International Airport) and Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (Guanacaste Airport or Daniel Oduber International Airport, previously Liberia International Airport).

These airports are identified by their respective codes: SJO for Juan Santamaría International Airport and LIR for Guanacaste Airport.

Notably, the distance between these two airports, LIR and SJO, is approximately 210 kilometers (130 miles).

Which Costa Rica Airport Should You Arrive At?

This question is frequently asked, and the answer depends on various factors, including your travel plans and preferences.

When deciding between Costa Rica’s two international airports, several considerations come into play. Your itinerary, destination, and specific needs will influence your choice. Let’s explore the key factors to help you make an informed decision.

San Jose International Airport (Juan Santamaría International Airport)

Costa Rica’s primary aviation hub is Juan Santamaría International Airport, bearing the code SJO. As the largest and most bustling airport in the country, it boasts the greatest number of gates and international flights.

Notably, Juan Santamaría International Airport is situated in the Alajuela province, rather than the capital city of San Jose. This airport lies approximately 30 minutes from downtown San Jose, with the San Jose domestic airport, serving domestic airlines, conveniently located adjacent to it.

Juan Santamaría Airport is the ideal entry point for travelers bound for the Caribbean, Central Valley Region, Central and South Pacific, Osa Peninsula, North Zone, and South Zone.

As the closest international airport to numerous Costa Rican destinations and natural attractions, SJO Airport offers convenient access to popular spots like Puerto Viejo, Tortuguero, San Isidro de Perez Zeledon, Drake Bay, Sarapiqui, Jaco, Turrialba, Uvita, Dominical, San Vito, La Paz, Bajos del Toro, San Gerardo de Dota, Santa Teresa, Puntarenas, Manuel Antonio, Grecia, San Ramon, Cartago, and the Osa Peninsula.

SJO Airport: Hub for Global Airlines

A diverse range of prominent airlines operate direct flights to Costa Rica, including American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Aeromexico, Volaris, Arajet, Air France, KLM, Southwest Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Avianca, British Airways, Alaska Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, Jet Blue, Condor, Copa Airlines, Edelweiss, Iberojet, Iberia, Latam, and Wingo.

These airlines offer non-stop services from various regions, including North America, Latin America (Central and South America), and Europe, connecting Costa Rica to countries such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Peru, Colombia, Guatemala, Spain, England, the Netherlands, Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Switzerland, and Guatemala.

Essential Information for Arriving at Juan Santamaría International Airport

Flying into Juan Santamaría International Airport can offer more affordable flights compared to Guanacaste Airport, making it a popular choice for travelers. When searching for flights to Costa Rica, consider comparing prices at both international airports for the best deals.

Upon arrival, taxis, Ubers, and private shuttle drivers are readily available. For car rentals, a shuttle will transport you to the agency’s office to collect your vehicle. Shared shuttles can be accessed by taking a taxi to the designated pick-up point at Denny’s Restaurant or Rostipollos. The bus stop is located on the main street, a short walk from the airport.

Please note that landing in San Jose can be turbulent due to the mountainous terrain. Airport hotels with free shuttle services are plentiful, but be aware that traffic in San Jose is challenging, especially during rush hour. Allow ample time for immigration and customs, as wait times can be longer than at Liberia Airport, especially on weekends. Departing passengers should arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to their flight. VIP lounges are available for eligible passengers.

San Jose Domestic Airport

Adjacent to the international airport lies the San Jose Domestic Terminal, dedicated solely to domestic flights. This airport serves as a hub for two prominent domestic airlines, Green and Sansa Air, offering routes to various Costa Rican destinations, including La Fortuna, Quepos, Drake Bay, Golfito, Tamarindo, Puerto Jimenez, and more.

Travelers can seamlessly connect to their final destination via a domestic flight after landing at SJO International Airport. However, it is crucial to ensure a sufficient layover to complete immigration and customs procedures at the international airport before proceeding to the domestic terminal. For domestic flights, passengers are advised to arrive at the terminal at least one hour prior to departure.

Guanacaste Airport

Daniel Oduber International Airport, also known as Liberia International Airport, is the second international airport in Costa Rica, serving as a vital gateway to the Northern Pacific coast. Located just 15 minutes from Liberia, the capital city of Guanacaste, this airport offers convenient access to the region’s stunning beaches and attractions.

As a key hub for Guanacaste, Nicoya Peninsula, and Northern Lowlands, LIR Airport is experiencing significant growth, with ongoing renovations and expansions to accommodate the increasing number of tourists. This has led to more airlines operating non-stop flights to Costa Rica, making it easier to find affordable options.

If your destination is Gulf of Papagayo, Brasilito, Tilaran, Nuevo Arenal, Rincon de la Vieja, Samara, Ostional, Junquillal, Punta Islita, Las Catalinas, Avellanas, Grande, Negra, Playas del Coco, Ocotal, Hermosa, Panama, La Cruz, Curubande, Dreams Las Mareas, Bijagua, Liberia, Conchal, Tamarindo, Langosta, Flamingo, Nicoya, or Nosara, flying into Liberia International Airport is the ideal choice.

Airlines Flying into Guanacaste Airport

A diverse range of prominent airlines operate flights to Guanacaste Airport, including American Airlines, Air Canada, Air Transat, Alaska Airlines, Copa Airlines, Delta, Edelweiss, JetBlue, KLM, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, Sunwing, Tui, United Airlines, and Westjet.

This airport offers a significant advantage, with direct flights available from North America (USA and Canada), Latin America, and Europe, making it easily accessible from various regions worldwide.

Essential Information for Arriving at Guanacaste Airport (Liberia International Airport)

Navigating Guanacaste Airport is straight forward, and driving from the airport is a breeze.

While there are limited airport hotels in the immediate vicinity, the nearby beach town of Playas del Coco is just a 25-minute drive away. The Hilton Liberia Airport Garden Inn is a convenient option, offering a free airport shuttle.

Notably, Liberia Airport does not have a separate terminal for domestic flights, which are operated by Sansa Air and depart from the same terminal. Domestic flights are less frequent than in San Jose.

Shuttle services are available to transport passengers to the agency’s office for car rentals. Private shuttles await outside the airport exit, while shared shuttles require a short taxi ride to the Hilton Garden Inn Guanacaste Airport. Public buses have varying pickup points, with some stopping outside the airport and others requiring a 20-minute walk to the main road.

It is recommended to arrive at the airport 2-3 hours prior to departure.

Airport Options for Your Destination

Both San Jose and Liberia international airports offer convenient access to various destinations with similar travel times. This flexibility allows you to choose the airport and itinerary that best suits your needs.

While I recommend flying into Guanacaste for easier driving access, San Jose is also a viable option. From San Jose, you can take the Puntarenas Paquera ferry to reach Paquera, Tambor, Montezuma, Santa Teresa, and other nearby destinations.

Some of the destinations accessible from both airports include:

  • Tambor
  • Paquera
  • Montezuma
  • La Fortuna
  • Monteverde
  • Santa Teresa
