The Rich History of Monteverde

Monteverde is found in the 30-mile long Tilaran Mountain Range which stretches between Arenal Volcano and the Avocado Mountains. The mountains were formed by tectonic plate movements in the Tertiary Period over 50 million years ago.

The indigenous history of the Monteverde region has not been widely studied although artifacts have been discovered. Between 1915 and 1920, five to eight families moved to the mountains to cultivate the farmland and establish cattle farming. When the USA went to war in Korea, several Quaker families decided to leave the country rather than be enlisted due to their religious beliefs and founded their own community in Monteverde.

This religious group started a fine cheese business which continues to thrive today. In the 1970s and 1980s, the close knit, collaborative community realized the importance of coming together in a cooperative organization for business and to form non-profit groups to protect the fragile ecosystem surrounding them.

Monteverde is located in Central America and boasts a remarkable history of embracing nature conservation and sustainable tourism. The region’s commitment to preserving its rainforests has solidified its reputation as a beacon of environmental stewardship.

Monteverde’s cloud forest reserves have become well-renowned as an area of study for biologists, a place of wondrous discovery for nature lovers, and an adrenaline-fueled playground for adventure seekers.

Belcruz Family Lodge was a beautiful place to stay. Things we loved:

(1) the lit and paved pathway at night through the jungle to the restaurant

(2) the restaurant on this property is excellent. The included breakfast was delicious and generous, cooked especially for us, to order every morning. The restaurant is open for gourmet dining in the evening also. The view from the restaurant was lovely…even had monkeys outside the windows at breakfast one morning

(3) we loved sitting on the decks of our little cabin villas overlooking the jungle listening and watching the birds.

(4) the price was so reasonable for our little cabin and was completely acceptable for all our needs.

Such a friendly and delightful hotel. Everyone there was so sweet, and Randall the owner’s son, who is the head chef, is SO talented. You absolutely must stay for the dinner, it was the best meal we had in Monteverde! Beautiful surroundings (the rooms are all set back along a beautiful path through the trees) and delicious breakfasts, and incredibly helpful and friendly staff. Incredible value and perfect spot to stay in Monteverde. You’ll love it.

The rooms are huge and adorable with intricate wood work, a fridge, large shower, tea kettle, nice sitting area out side, and spotless, I mean not a single speck of dust. When we were shown our room by Randal mind you who also helped with the luggage they had decorated it for Valentine’s day with flower peddles on the bed, he called it the Day of love. FREE BREAKFAST which is exceptional, for example, their granola and marmalade they make themselves. The restaurant is as good if not better than any you will find in town and the wine collection is sublime.

The premises sits on Randal’s family farm and the grounds are also immaculate and spotless, there is a lovely trail that goes to the top of the mountain for breathtaking views of sunset and the valleys below, and a nice sitting area part way up. For dinner there is a paved trail that is lighted down to the restaurant with a creek running through it. We went for a glass of wine one night, and they brought us a complementary tray of delicious cheese, home made bread and vegetables, totally Un-expected and very gracious.

The price for all this is so obscenely inexpensive I cant wrap my mind around it. Look I’ll sum it up, if you don’t stay here while in Monteverde you are missing a real experience period. We told him if we ever come back this is the only place we would even consider, I wish we could have bundles it up and taken it with us the rest of our journey. It is very close to Sevatura and St Elena reserve but away from the bustles of town but also close enough to eat or shop if you wish.
