Contents

For an unparalleled hiking experience in Costa Rica, Catarata La Leona promises an adventure like no other. Tucked away in the rugged canyons and caves of a breathtaking blue river, this enchanting waterfall awaits discovery. To preserve the surprise, let’s delve into the essentials before unveiling the excitement that awaits.

We’ll start with the vital information, followed by an immersive journey into the heart of this natural wonder.

Hike Duration and Intensity: What to Expect

Embarking on the Catarata La Leona adventure requires a three-hour commitment. The primary trail is classified as moderately challenging, demanding a reasonable level of physical fitness. To tackle this journey, you’ll need to be capable of navigating unpaved paths, crossing rivers, and possessing the upper body strength to utilize ropes for support. It’s essential to be free of any mobility limitations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Optimal Visiting Conditions

For the most favorable experience, plan your visit during the peak dry season, spanning from January to April. This period offers ideal conditions, with dry trails, minimal mud, and a gentle river current. In contrast, visiting during the rainy season demands greater preparation, as you’ll encounter muddier paths and a stronger current.

Additionally, it’s essential to consider the proximity of Rincon de la Vieja, an active volcano, which may impact the water quality and tour operations in the event of an eruption, although predicting such events is impossible.

Is the Catarata La Leona Hike Right for You?

Embrace the adventure if you’re willing to take on a challenge! While the hike is suitable for most, certain conditions apply. A good level of physical fitness is essential to navigate the natural terrain, which includes walking through rivers and on unpaved paths for a few kilometers. Additionally, you must be comfortable with deep water and possess swimming skills.

However, if you have any mobility or foot issues, or struggle with long-distance walking, this hike may not be suitable for you. The trail features a natural, rugged path with obstacles like rocks, branches, and tree roots. Although the elevation gain is moderate, you’ll need to be able to walk for several miles on uneven terrain. Furthermore, you’ll need to use a rope to access the waterfall cave and endure the hot and humid conditions of the dry forest, with temperatures averaging 33°C (91°F).a

Welcome to Finca Don Rafa: Your Journey Begins

Your adventure commences with a 1 hour and 50-minute drive from Tamarindo, arriving at Finca Don Rafa at approximately 9:30 AM.

As you arrive, you’ll be greeted by one of the owners. After gearing up, changing, and using the facilities, your guide will lead you into the forest, marking the start of your exciting journey. We’ve taken care of the details to ensure a seamless experience, allowing you to focus on the thrill of discovery ahead.

Embarking on the Catarata La Leona Adventure

Your journey begins with a leisurely start, as your guide introduces you to the picturesque river pools, perfect for a refreshing bath.

The river’s origin, the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, imbues the water with a breathtaking blue hue.

As you hike, your guide shares insights into the unique characteristics of the tropical dry forest, pointing out fascinating trees and plants. You’ll also discover the legends behind the names “Curubande” and “Rincon de la Vieja.” These stories tell the tale of a tragic love affair between Curubande, the village chief’s daughter, and the son of a rival tribe’s chief. The locals believe that the howling wind at night is Curubande’s spirit, still grieving her lost love and son. These enchanting stories only add to the magic of the experience as you cross the blue rivers and pools.

After the final river crossing, your guide will lead you to explore the canyons. The path may seem unassuming, but trust in your guide’s expertise as you ascend the rocky hill, surrounded by tree branches.

Discovering the Hidden Wonders of Caves and Canyons

As you emerge on the other side of the hill, a breathtaking open canyon and caves come into view. Your guide will share the fascinating history of the rock formations, shaped by a volcanic eruption many years ago. You’ll learn that this site is a temporary home to lechuzas, or little owls, during certain months, earning it the name Cañon La Lechuza.

As you venture through the cave, you’ll catch glimpses of furry faces peeking down at you – not owls, but bats, hanging upside down, napping and observing their visitors. With each cave exit, you’ll feel like you’re entering a new world.

After exploring several caves, you’ll arrive at a serene section of the river, where the brilliant blue water beckons. Take a refreshing dip to cool off from the hike.

Although you’ll be having a blast swimming and jumping in the pool, your guide will soon signal it’s time to move on, promising that the best is yet to come. Trust in their expertise and follow them further down the river, until you reach the majestic entrance to the Catarata La Leona. Then, you’ll understand why your guide said the previous section wasn’t the most beautiful part of the river.

The Final Leg of Your Journey: Reaching Catarata La Leona

As you round the bend, a serene blue pool comes into view, with a rope stretching into the cave in the distance. The sound of crashing water grows louder, building your anticipation. Your guide explains the next step in your adventure.

You’ll swim through the canyon, using the rope to guide you into the cave, where the majestic waterfall awaits. With a reassuring “Todo bien?”, your guide takes the plunge, motioning for you to follow.

The water level is manageable, and the current is gentle, making it easy to swim to the cave. Once inside, your guide helps you out of the water and onto the rocks, instructing you to turn around. And then, the breathtaking Catarata La Leona waterfall comes into view!

While not the largest waterfall, its secluded location within the cave makes it all the more special, given the journey you’ve undertaken to reach it – trekking up rocky hills, exploring caves, and swimming through river pools.

Essential Tips for Your Catarata La Leona Adventure

As you prepare for your journey, remember to pack the right attire. Wear a swimsuit, quick-drying clothes (like Roxy board shorts and Nike dri-fit shirts), and closed-toed shoes. The rocky terrain demands closed-toed shoes, like KEEN hiking sandals, which are ideal for both water and land. Avoid tennis shoes and socks, as they’ll get soaked.

Ladies, feel free to wear your swimsuit during swimming time, but consider a one-piece suit to avoid any mishaps. Your guide will appreciate your preparedness, and you’ll enjoy the adventure without any worries. Remember, safety and comfort are key to making the most of your Catarata La Leona experience.

What to bring: As you prepare for your adventure, remember to bring a few vital items. Pack a change of clothes, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, and a waterproof camera (such as a GoPro 8) to capture the memories. Don’t forget waterproof backpacks and dry bags to keep your belongings safe.

While your guide may provide a dry bag, it’s essential to bring your own to ensure it’s waterproof and in good condition. Unfortunately, Yeison’s phone got wet and died due to a hole in the provided dry bag. Protect your valuables with a reliable waterproof phone pouch and backpack, like my trusty Aqua Quest gear, which kept everything dry. The finca offers changing rooms, a bathroom, and a small picnic area for your convenience.
