Car Rental at Liberia Airport (LIR), Costa Rica

22 Oct 2026

Your car rental at LIR airport starts right outside the arrivals exit at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste. A Vamos agent waits there with a VAMOS sign, and our free shuttle takes you 2 km west to our Liberia office on Highway 21, about a 7-minute ride.

Vamos Rent-A-Car is an independently owned Costa Rican car rental company that has served travelers since 2004, with one office near Liberia airport and another near San José airport (SJO). We keep our Liberia office off the airport grounds, so the 12% airport tax stays off your bill, and the price we quote is the price you pay.

Every Liberia rental includes:

  • A free meet-and-greet and two-way shuttle between the LIR terminal and our office.
  • Our free perks: a cell phone, a cooler, roof racks, additional drivers and your first child seat.
  • 24/7 roadside assistance anywhere in Costa Rica.

How Pickup Works at Liberia Airport

  1. Add your flight number when you book. We watch the arrivals schedule, so a delayed flight just means we wait for you. You can follow your flight on Guanacaste Airport's arrivals board.
  2. Collect your bags, clear customs and walk straight out through the arrivals exit. Our agent waits outside with a VAMOS sign. The shuttle also carries the name of Poas, our sister company, so you know you have the right van.
  3. The shuttle takes you and your group to our office on Highway 21, 2 km west of the terminal. The ride takes about 7 minutes and costs nothing.
  4. At the office we go over the paperwork, walk around the car with you and hand over the keys. Bring your passport, your driver's license and the credit card for your deposit.

Over the years, a few of our customers have been told by people outside the terminal that Vamos had closed. We're open, and we're waiting for you. If you can't spot your agent, borrow a phone and call us at 4000-0557.

Our Liberia airport rental guide walks through the terminal step by step, from customs to the curb.

What a Car Rental at Liberia Airport Costs

Your total is the daily rate for the car you pick plus Costa Rica's mandatory Third Party Liability (TPL) insurance. TPL costs $15.95 a day for sedan, intermediate, standard and full-size cars, and $17.95 a day for premium cars. Your credit card's coverage can stand in for our collision waiver, and Costa Rican law requires TPL on every rental.

Daily rates change with the season and the car, so the fastest way to see your exact total is a free quote on our reservations page. Rentals run at least 3 days, and at least 7 days between December 23 and January 5.

Your deposit depends on the coverage you choose: $100 with our full coverage, $750 with our basic collision waiver, or $2,000 if you use your credit card's collision coverage. To use your card's coverage, bring a letter from your card company showing your full name and the last four digits of the card. Our Costa Rica car rental insurance guide explains each option.

The price we quote is the final price. Airport taxes, license plate fees and environmental charges never appear on your bill, and if another company quotes less for a similar car, our price match guarantee means we'll match it.

Car Delivery to Guanacaste Beaches

Staying at a beach rental or a hotel in Guanacaste? We can deliver your car there with the paperwork already done. These are the one-way delivery fees from our Liberia office to popular Guanacaste destinations:

DestinationDelivery fee
Playas del Coco$40
Panama Beach$40
Ocotal Beach$50
Flamingo Beach$55
Tamarindo$55
Conchal Beach$55
Playa Grande$55
Hacienda Pinilla$55
Nicoya$70
Nosara Beach$95
Samara Beach$95

If your town isn't listed, ask us for a quote, or see the full delivery fee table. A pickup or return outside office hours adds $20 to cover staff overtime.

Choosing a Car for Guanacaste Roads

Your route decides the car. A sedan handles the paved roads to Tamarindo, Flamingo and Playas del Coco in the dry season. Nosara and Santa Teresa sit at the end of rough dirt roads, and from May to November afternoon rain turns those roads to mud, so book a 4x4 for either one.

Every car we rent is covered by our Valid Tread Pledge: our mechanics replace any tire with less than 2 mm of tread, which is the legal minimum in Costa Rica. You also drive away with the transmission you booked. Our driving in Costa Rica page covers road rules and tips for your first time behind the wheel here.

Returning Your Car Before Your Flight

Plan on about 30 minutes to close out your rental at the office, a 5 to 10-minute shuttle back to the terminal, and at least 2 hours for check-in and security. Our Liberia office opens at 7:00 AM, so a flight leaving before about 9:40 AM needs a different plan:

  • Return the car the evening before, by our 7:00 PM closing, and stay at a hotel with an airport shuttle.
  • Ask us to open early for a $20 overtime fee.
  • As a last resort, leave the car in the airport parking lot and we'll collect it. You stay responsible for the car and the parking fee until we pick it up.

Liberia Airport Car Rental FAQs

Does Vamos have a rental counter inside Liberia airport?

No. Our agent meets you outside the arrivals exit with a VAMOS sign and takes you on our free shuttle to our office 2 km away. Staying off the airport grounds keeps the 12% airport tax off your bill.

How far is the Vamos office from Liberia airport?

Our Liberia office is 2 km west of the LIR terminal on Highway 21, about a 7-minute drive. The shuttle ride is free in both directions.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Liberia, Costa Rica?

Your total is the daily rate for your car plus mandatory TPL insurance of $15.95 a day, or $17.95 a day for premium cars. Daily rates change with the season and the vehicle, and our quote includes everything, with no airport tax added. You can see your exact total in a free quote on our reservations page.

Is it cheaper to rent a car at the airport or book online?

Booking online is the safer choice, because it locks in your car and your price before you fly. Vamos has no desk inside the terminal, and cars can sell out during the December to April dry season.

Can a US citizen rent a car in Costa Rica?

Yes. You need a valid US driver's license, your passport, and a major credit card for the deposit, and every driver must be at least 18. An International Driving Permit is only required when a license is printed in a non-Latin alphabet. Our rental requirements page lists the details.

Can I pick up my car in Liberia and return it in San José?

Yes. A one-way rental between our Liberia and San José offices costs $50. Our San José office is 2 km from SJO airport, so you can fly home from either airport.

We'll meet you at LIR with a sign and a free ride to your car.
